SPOTTED: Clé Bennett at the ReelWorld Film Festival

I got the chance to meet Clé Bennett at the ReelWorld Film Festival’s opening night gala last week in Toronto and he was kind enough to do a quick interview to talk to us about his role in the new TMN/HBO Canada series, The Line.

Could you tell us a little more about the show?
It follows the lives of cops, criminals and everybody in between.

There always seem to be a lot of cop shows. What sets this one apart?
What sets this show apart are its characters. The show goes real in-depth with the problems of the characters.

Could you tell us about your character?
I play a character named Carlos and he’s a drug dealer with an anxiety disorder. It’s like one minute, he’ll be raging and the next minute he’ll be crying because he ran out of rice-cakes. He goes through a lot of ups and downs. There are a lot of levels to this character.

The show has been getting a lot of comparisons to The Wire.
It’s not like The Wire. There are similarities with the cops and the drug dealers but to tell you the truth, it would be like comparing “The Godfather” to “Goodfellas”. “Goodfellas” is funny. It could be like comparing it to a Guy Ritchie movie. It’s gangsters and cops but it’s still funny…and that’s the difference between our show and The Wire. The Wire is procedural…but on our show, the cops don’t solve any crimes. I’m a dealer but I don’t deal any drugs. It’s just about the dramas that we go through.

For those who want to catch up with the series, how can we do that? Is it available on TMN on Demand?
Yes, Rogers on Demand. If you go to www.thelinetv.net, there are also previews of the episodes.

Clé also appeared in Soul, which starred Keshia Chanté, as a record producer and is also known for his work in the Gemini-nominated film. The actor has also appeared in a number of other films including “Steal”, “Harvard Man”, and “How She Move”. Clé also has an extensive list of television appearances as he has appeared on a number of Canadian-produced series such as Soul Food, Instant Star, This Is Wonderland and The Eleventh Hour.

Clé’s next guest appearance will be on an upcoming episode of Flashpoint where his character takes a hospital hostage.

The Line airs Mondays at 10pm on The Movie Network (and Movie Central in Western Canada). The series also airs at 9pm on HBO Canada.
