The TV Watercooler

Blue Mountain State, Jersey Shore, Conan and more

— If you haven’t heard of Blue Mountain State, I suggest you to tune in. The half-hour comedy is about a couple of football players at a US state college which stars Darin Brooks (ex-Max, Days of our Lives) and Sam Jones III (ex-Pete, Smallville). I’d describe the show has a hybrid of the first few American Pie films with a little of Van Wilder thrown in there. It’s a show that guys will obviously love more; no, not because of the football, but because of the gratuitous sexuality.

The first episode involves a threesome which makes the following episode set mostly in a strip club a little tame. Some of the sexual exploits may seem a little cliché at first, they end up being really funny and original. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a show where a guy lost his promise ring inside of a stripper before. The series was filmed in Montreal last summer and airs in the States on Spike TV. While Spike TV is available in Canada, Canadian viewers will have to check it out on premium movie channel, Super Channel – which is airing episodes two weeks behind the American broadcast. New episodes premiere on Super Channel every Monday at 11:30pm. They’ll be airing the second episode tonight. If you missed the premiere, you can catch it on Thursday, Jan. 28th at 7:30pm (with Episode 2 following). All episodes on Super Channel will air uncut commercial free and in HD.

Here’s a preview:

— The Jersey Shore kids think they’re the cast of friends and are banding together for a pay raise. But MTV has told them to accept whatever deal that has been made for the second season or else they’ll be replaced. I just hope Snooki takes the deal. I can’t imagine a second season without Snooki. So how much are the guidos and guidettes making? TMZ is reporting that MTV has offered them each a $10,000 singing bonus and then $5,000 per episode. The crew has until the end of business day today to decide.

— Sad news…David Tennant’s Rex is Not Your Lawyer isn’t good enough for NBC.

— I guess I had to watch Conan O’Brien’s final Tonight Show to believe it was really happening…NBC was actually letting him go (with a reported $45 million for him and his staff) and bringing back Jay Leno. I hope people continue to boycott Leno in March. O’Brien was a class act all throughout the night. Jimmy Fallon and The Roots also had a nice tribute to Coco at the start of Late Nigh when they took over the Dr. Oz studios (O’Brien’s former home at 30 Rock). Speaking of The Roots, Questlove tweeted that O’Brien’s finale cost NBC half a million dollars when the show played The Beatles’ “Lovely Rita” when Tom Hanks came on stage; the song was of course, in honour of his wife, Rita Wilson.

Rob Lowe will be leaving Brothers & Sisters at the end of this season. Lowe joined the series towards the end of its first season. I think they’ll probably kill Robert off unexpectedly after Kitty makes a full recovery from her cancer. I always found Kitty and Robert rather dull. Plus, how many divorces can the Walker kids go through? I always thought the addition of Rowe was strange since there were already too many big names attached to the show when it first launched. The actor is in talks to headline the new Shonda Rhimes medical with American doctors (what else) set in the tropics which will also be on ABC.

— So apparently The Office’s BJ Novak and Mindy Kaling were a real item?
