This week, both The Hills and The City got a little catty. The Roots played “Smelly Cat” for Lisa Kudrow on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Betty White’s new show didn’t premiere in Canada.
Here’s a rundown on what I thought were the best show’s this week. I’m off next week, but you should check out the MuchMusic Video Awards tonight. The red carpet is at 8pm while the main show gets underway at 9pm with performances by Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Adam Lambert, Drake, Ke$ha and more. This year’s presenters include Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr, Jonathan Toews from the Chicago Blackhawks, 90210’s Shenae Grimes, The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev, Twilight’s Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene & Xavier Samuel, as well as The City’s Whitney Port, The Hills’ Kristin Cavallari and Jersey Shore’s Snooki & Pauly D. Miley Cyrus will co-host and perform a couple of songs. U.S. viewers can catch it Fuse (the network which originally launched as MuchUSA in the 90s).
Other picks include ABC’s Scoundrels and The Gates (tonight at 9pm and 10pm) and Global’s Rookie Blue this Thursday at 9pm. The Toronto-shot series which stars Missy Peregrym (Reaper and Heroes), Gregory Smith (Everwood) and Ben Bass (The Eleventh Hour and Forever Knight) will also airs in the U.S. on ABC.
Breaking Bad: “Full Measure”
In an effort to save Walt’s (Bryan Cranston) life (and his own), it was up to Jesse (Aaron Paul) to kill Gale (David Costabile). While there was some confusion on whether or not Jesse succeeded in the final scene, Vince Gilligan has confirmed that Jesse did shoot Gale. The Hard Times of R.J. Berger: “Yes We Can’t”
Kat and I also discuss the latest episode of The Hard Times of R.J. Berger in this week’s TV Casualty podcast. While we know this is high school and all, we don’t really see get the appeal of Jenny Swanson (Amber Lancaster). Sure, she’s hot and all, but she’s painfully dumb.
The Hills: “Between a Rocker and a Hard Place”
Oh what a clever title. Speaking of the “rocker,” does Ryan Cabrera really still have that one hit (“Long Way Down”)? Didn’t that come out during his Ashlee Simpson phase? Audrina, hurry up and choose Justin Bobby over Ryan. This plot has been stretched out long enough. Anyway, how long are we supposed to go without Spencer and Heidi? There are only a few episodes left. I can’t believe I’m missing them. Stephanie cooked for Max but didn’t eat her own salad. She told him that if he saw how she made it, he wouldn’t be eating either. That is utterly gross. Clearly, it was one salad which wasn’t a party. The best part of the episode had to be the confrontation between the jungle cats at the Nylon party. We had that cougar Allie taking on Kristin in her lioness headpiece. “Mickey” finally told Allie off when she asked her why she didn’t just walk away. Oh McKaela, you are a pretty girl. You should be the one walking away from all of this. Brody doesn’t want you. Ditch the Lutz and find yourself a nice guy.
The City: “Work Horses and Show Ponies”
So Robbie Myers didn’t fire Olivia from Elle? Erin seems concerned that Louise, the girl she handpicked to be Olivia’s replacement, could actually become friends with the flowey haired stick-figure. If you didn’t already know, Lou’s got her own TV show on The CW called Plain Jane. Olivia is just annoying. She always tries to put herself on the same level as the designers that she’s interviewing. I don’t think the audience really cares that you will also be vacationing in the same place as Zac Posen, just talk fashion and shut up. If I wanted to know your travel itinerary, I’d add you on LinkedIn and check out your TripIt information. Meanwhile at a group show in Miami, Whitney finally stood up for herself when her dumb model booked a second gig. Whitney actually (gasp) called someone a bitch and then told her off! Our girl has come a long way. Kelly and Roxy’s influences have finally paid off. The Whit of old would have let the model double-book herself and then scrambled at the last minute.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: Lisa Kudrow
Lisa Kudrow dropped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday and The Roots did an awesome rendition of the Phoebe Buffay hit, “Smelly Cat.” The former Friends star’s web series, Web Therapy, has just been picked up by Showtime and should hit TV screens early next year. Lisa and Jimmy also took part in a hilarious game of charades with two lucky audience members.
Hot in Cleveland: “Pilot”
Betty White’s new sitcom premiered to record viewers in the United States this past week and sadly, despite the current Betty craze, no Canadian network has picked it up (we get a watered down version of TV Land, as all other “specialty” stations). I thought the sitcom’s premiere episode was okay. Since its summer, I’ll probably check out a couple of more episodes before I make my final verdict (this is for Betty anyway). Looking forward to seeing John Schneider do some comedy. I was born
after The Dukes of Hazzard, so I’ve only see him do dramas. He was quite serious on Smallville (playing Jonathan Kent) but played a couple of douche bags really well (Nip/Tuck and 90210 … both with AnnaLynne McCord).
The Bold and the Beautiful: Another Bang.
I began tuning back into B&B last week due to Brooke and Oliver’s accidental bang, but this week the show surprised the fans with another BANG. Stephanie (Susan Flannery) took Stephen’s gun away from Pam (Alley Mills) and shot him in the shoulder. Stephen’s (Patrick Duffy) plot was to get Stephanie’s crazy sister Pam (the mom from The Wonder Years) to off her sister because of all the pain Queen Stephanie has caused his loved ones, but Stephanie got the upper hand (and gun). After shooting him in the shoulder, it looked like Stephanie was going to shoot him again as she told him to say “hello” to his recently deceased wife Beth. Meanwhile across town, Nick (Jack Wagner) found out that not only did his wife Bridget (Ashley Jones) cheat on him with his (much younger) stepfather, but Owen’s (Brandon Beemer) actually her unborn baby’s real daddy.
General Hospital: Johnny and…Kristina?
Kristina’s (Lexi Ainsworth) convinced Johnny (Brandon Barash) to play along her in scheme to piss off her dad Sonny (Maurice Benard) by pretending that they are dating. What if Kristina actually started falling for him? While fun at first, the Johnny and Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) pairing shouldn’t have lasted this long. As for Johnny, I’d rather see him get closer to Brooklyn (Adrianne Leon). While we’re at it, I think it’s about time that forge ahead with a Maxie/Lucky pairing since we all know Liz is actually carrying Lucky’s baby (for once) and not Nikolas’.
The Young and the Restless: Jill and Lauren are sisters?!
Did they really need to kill Liz Foster (Julianna McCarthy) off to reveal that Jill (Jess Walton) is really Neil Fenmore’s daughter? You know, Liz and Snapper (David Hasselhoff) could have just come to town to tell Liz the truth. There was no need to kill Liz off if they weren’t going to give her a proper memorial service. Why I don’t get it why didn’t Liz show any remorse for breaking up Billy and Mac several years ago on their wedding day (when they found out they were “cousins”)? Jill and Lauren (Tracey E. Bregman) being sisters would have been interesting if there was actual conflict between these two characters, I can’t even remember the last time these two were in a scene together.
