Soap Notes: Terri Colombino joins OLTL, Drunk Nikki gets busted on Y&R, GH’s Patrick gets mentioned on Letterman and more

Former As The World Turns star Terri Colombino (ex-Katie) is headed to One Life to Live in late November in the contract role of Aubrey, who will be connected to the Buchanan family. It’s speculated that Aubrey is the long lost daughter of Clint (Jerry ver Dorn) and Echo (Kim Zimmer). Colombino portrayed Katie on ATWT  from 1998 until the series’ end last month, but she’ll always hold a soft spot in my heart for her role as southern belle, Ashley DuPree (of the Georgia DuPree’s) on Breaker High. Also heading to OLTL as the new Joey is Colombino’s one-time ATWT co-star Tom Degnan (ex-Adam). Newcomer Josh Kelly was originally cast as the latest Joey, but producers quickly recast the role with Degnan. Kelly will still join the ABC soap but in the newly created mystery role.

While ATWT’s Katie is headed to Llanview, her former co-stars Maura West (Diane, ex-Carly, ATWT) and Paul Leyden (Blake; ex-Simon, ATWT) are mixing things up on The Young and the Restless. When it was first announced that West was assuming the role of Diane Jenkins on Y&R I was a bit worried. Don’t get me wrong, she was great as Carly on ATWT but I was concerned about making Diane about a decade and a half younger. I just didn’t see how my “Carly” has had relationships with both Eric Braeden’s Victor Newman and Peter Bergman’s Jack Abbott (West is 38 while Jack’s well into his 50s). But West’s performance as the catty Diane has won me over. She’s no longer the insecure Carly, she’s the sneaky and manipulative Diane Jenkins now. West going toe-to-toe with Melody Thomas Scott’s Drunk Nikki was great. The line about how well adjusted Kyle is as opposed to Nikki’s children, who had “an ex-stripper, pill-popping alcoholic mother who bounces from husband to husband while he’s shipped off to boarding school” was hilarious. My only issue is that Kyle is still 12 years old, while Abby is now an adult. As you may remember, Kyle and Abby were born around the same time due to the infamous sperm-snatching plot (Ashley replaced Victor’s sample with Jack’s at the lab – causing Diane to steal the wrong batch).

Speaking of Drunk Nikki – I’m really enjoying Scott’s current storyline. The unraveling of Nikki Newman is amazing. I’m sure everyone is surprised by Sean Young’s performance as the nasty Meggie as well (poor Murphy!).   The actress recently spoke to TV Guide’s Michael Logan and appears to be having just as much fun with this storyline as we are. Apparently she hated it when Nikki had a job. “It’s so not her,” she shares. “She’s always more interesting when she’s frustrated and has no life.” Scott also previews Nikki getting busted next week: “She and Meggie trot off to Fenmore’s to buy a wedding dress for the elopement. Of course, Jill (Jess Walton) is there skulking. Meggie’s up to her tricks and slips some vodka into Nikki’s tea. After they leave, Jill smells the vodka in Nikki’s cup and goes straight to Victor and tells him.

As for Paul Leyden’s storyline on Y&R, I’ll be the first to admit that Cane and Lily’s storylines have been a real bore, but watching Cane (Daniel Goddard) beat up Blake (Leyden) was a great switch. Cane just got interesting. Looks like he’s just as bad as the cattle crew he helped send to prison.

SoapNet just released this new screencap of Kimberlin Brown as the Pine Valley judge presiding over the “Who Killed David” case. Y&R really wasted their opportunity this past year to correct the “Sheila looks like Phyllis” and “She’s got a sister who looks like Lauren” faux-pas.

While General Hospital seems to be on Brenda overload (not that I’m complaining), the one none-Brenda related storyline that has been actually pretty good is Patrick cheating on Robin with that psycho Lisa. While all “Scrubs” fans are pissed at head writer Bob Guza for breaking up Patrick (Jason Thompson) and Robin (Kimberly McCullough) by having him cheat, it’s actually garnered some pretty good material for the leads. Besides, it even gave us a chance to see Robin get a “visit” from Stone (Michael Sutton). The storyline was also mentioned in the David Letterman’s Top 10 this week as the Late Show counted down the list of Obama’s Top 10 enemies where Patrick was ranked as #9 for cheating on Robin with Lisa (Brianna Brown). Letterman’s inclusion encouraged Thompson to finally publish his first tweet.
