I had an amazing opportunity to go check out Montreal’s Osheaga Music and Arts Festival last week. The three-day concert took place at Parc Jean-Drapeau, where five stages were set up. Scene de la Rivere was the main stage, with Scene de la Montagne on it’s right. Scene Verte was off towards the back and featured more acoustic sets while Scene des Arbres was also close by. DJs were spinning all weekend long at the fifth stage, Scene Piknic Electronik, which had an amazing view of the city.
On Friday, I got to check out Bran Van 3000, Joseph Arthur, Broken Social Scene, Janelle Monae and Eminem. Unfortunately, I missed Bran Van’s “Drinking in L.A.” because I ran across the park to check out Joseph Arthur. Kid Koala stood in for Kid Cuddi due to illness, although there were rumours of a passport issue. There were a few sound issues during Eminem’s performance, but Slim Shady really killed it. To be honest, I was never a big Eminem fan, but his performance has really won me over. From what I’m told, Eminem doesn’t tour much, so I had to really embrace what I was about to witness. The turnout for Eminem was huge — 50,000 people (the biggest ever for Osheaga). It was hard to get right into the thick of things, because I had to protect my camera.

My lineup for Saturday included the Sam Roberts Band, Lupe Fiasco, Sia, Yoav, Death from Above 1979, Bright Eyes and Elvis Costello, while I checked out Cypress Hill, Beirut, Malajube, The Tragically Hip, White Lies, Shad, Crystal Castles, Jamie XX, Death Cab for Cutie and The Flaming Lips on Sunday. The biggest “technical” issue I had to deal with on Sunday was the amount of smoke during the Cypress Hill show. But that’s what happens when Cypress Hill takes the stage a few moments after 4:20. The biggest complaint from this day was the scheduling as I wanted to see Death Cab for Cutie and Crystal Castles — but both were playing at the same time. I decided to stick to Death Cab since Crystal Castles usually play Toronto often. Crystal Castles played a smaller stage, so the area was packed. White Lies were simply amazing. Really great band from London. Eminem, Bright Eyes, White Lies and Death Cab were my favourite performances from Osheaga 2011.
