Upfronts: CTV sticks with old hits (including Charlie Sheen) while Arrow and Nashville land at CTV Two

Bell Media has announced the fall schedules for CTV and CTV Two. Check out some highlights, trailers, photos and episode descriptions.

Bell Media has announced the fall schedules for CTV and CTV Two.

– CTV’s biggest acquisition is the previously announced Charlie Sheen vehicle, Anger Management from FX (Rogers did not bid on the series for FX Canada).

– With Flashpoint coming to an end, CTV has commissioned a new procedural, Motive (working title), which “follows a feisty female Vancouver homicide detective who matches withs with killers in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game.”

The Voice will go to CTV Two while CTV will air Dancing with the Stars and the Wednesday edition of The X Factor (Thursday X Factor goes to CTV Two)

– My new picks for the fall are on CTV Two, with Arrow and Nashville airing on Wednesday nights.

– Biggest disappointment: CTV Two no longer airing The Vampire Diaries an hour earlier than The CW at 7 p.m., instead it moves to 9 p.m. (airs at 8 p.m. on CW). We’d always watch it before the NBC comedies.

Official Program Descriptions

ANGER MANAGEMENT
Perhaps the most-anticipated comeback in television history, former TWO AND A HALF MEN star Charlie Sheen makes his much-buzzed about return to network primetime in ANGER MANAGEMENT, a new sitcom loosely based on the hit 2003 feature film of the same name. Sheen stars as “Charlie” a successful yet non-traditional therapist specializing in anger management. He has a successful private practice, holding sessions with his group of primary patients each week, as well as performing pro-bono counselling for an inmate group at a state prison. Prior to his career as a therapist, Charlie was a stalled minor league baseball prospect whose road to the majors was sidetracked by his own struggle with anger issues. After a stint in anger management therapy, he made it to the majors and had one terrific season before his anger issues put him on the shelf for good. In the final game of his career, he tried to snap a bat over his leg, which resulted in a career-ending injury. That injury led him back to school and to his current profession. Charlie thrives on the chaos in his life while still battling his own anger issues. His life is complicated by his relationships with his own therapist/best friend (Selma Blair), an ex-wife (Shawnee Smith) whose positive outlook but poor choice in men frustrates Charlie, and their 13-year-old daughter (Daniela Bobadilla) who has obsessive-compulsive disorder.

ARROW
One of the most sought-after new faces in Hollywood, Gemini Award-winning Canadian actor Stephen Amell stars in the new action-adventure drama ARROW. A modern retelling of the legendary DC Comics character Green Arrow, the series embraces a dark, cinematic take on the story of billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, who after a violent shipwreck was presumed dead but fought for his survival for five years on a remote island in the Pacific. Once rescued, Oliver returns home to Starling City, where his devoted mother Moira (Susanna Thompson), much-beloved sister Thea (Willa Holland) and best friend Tommy (Colin Donnell) welcome him home, but they soon realize that the Oliver they said goodbye to is very different from the one who returned. As Oliver tries to reconnect with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a ruthless vigilante determined to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. First on his list of targets is the villainous and corrupt businessman, Adam Hunt (Canadian Brian Markinson). By day, Oliver plays the role of the wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – watched closely by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle (David Ramsey) – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to in the darkness.

EMILY OWENS, M.D.
Set to become this season’s primetime darling, Mamie Gummer stars as a sweet medical school graduate who can’t escape her high school woes in EMILY OWENS, M.D. With natural talent and breakout roles on THE GOOD WIFE and OFF THE MAP, Gummer has skillfully stepped above being known simply as the daughter of Academy Award®-winning actor Meryl Streep. As Emily Owens, Gummer brings effortless charm to her role as a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital. There, Emily has the chance to work with world-famous cardiologist Dr. Gina Beckett (Necar Zadegan) and not-so-coincidentally alongside her med school crush and fellow intern Will Rider (Justin Hartley). So why does everyone keep warning her that the hospital is just like high school? Emily soon finds out the hard way – her high school nemesis, the gorgeous, popular Cassandra Kopelson (Aja Naomi King), is also just starting out at Denver Memorial, and it seems like they’re rivals all over again – not only as surgical interns, but for Will’s attention. Emily’s the new kid again, and it’s just as awkward as high school. Only this time around, Emily has to balance the personal and emotional turmoil of social politics with the high-stakes world of life-and-death medical decisions. At least she has fellow intern Tyra (Kelly McCreary), and nerdy-but-cute resident Micah (Michael Rady), to count on as friends. Emily is going to realize that although she may be a geek, she may also grow to be a great doctor.

NASHVILLE
From Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri (Thelma and Louise), comes the powerful new big-budget dramaNASHVILLE, a story of love, sex, power, money, music and family. At the centre of it all, critically-acclaimed actress and fan-favourite Connie Britton brings her Emmy®-nominated talents to the role of Rayna James, a country legend who’s had a career any singer would envy. Lately her popularity is starting to wane and her record label thinks a concert tour, opening for aggressive up-and-comer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), is just what Rayna needs. Singing for her role, Panettiere sinks her teeth into the character of scheming Juliette who can’t wait to steal Rayna’s spotlight. Sharing a stage with that disrespectful, untalented, little vixen is the last thing Rayna wants to do, which sets up a power struggle for popularity. Complicating matters is Rayna’s wealthy but estranged father, Lamar Hampton (Powers Boothe), a powerful force in business, Tennessee politics, and the lives of his two grown daughters. His drive for power results in a scheme to back Rayna’s handsome husband, Teddy (Eric Close), in a run for Mayor of Nashville, against Rayna’s wishes.

THE MOB DOCTOR
Offering a dramatic twist on the medical and crime procedural is THE MOB DOCTOR, a fast-paced new drama starring Jordana Spiro as Dr. Grace Devlin, a brilliant young surgeon split between her promising medical career and her lifelong debt to Chicago’s Southside mob. By day, Grace deals with the emotionally compelling cases at the hospital, but she must also juggle an onslaught of mob-related medical demands, all the while keeping her dual life a secret from everyone including her handsome, blue-blooded boyfriend Dr. Brett Robinson. The only people who know the true scope of Grace’s activities is her ex-boyfriend Franco, and the charming and diabolical Southside mob boss Constantine, an oddly compassionate killer whose relationship with Grace is more than it seems. As Grace tries to heed the demands of these two conflicting worlds, it’s her nerves of steel and a tough-as-nails exterior that somehow has her managing to make it all work – at least for now.

NEIGHBORS
Sci-fi family comedy THE NEIGHBORS follows one family’s attempt at a normal life in the suburbs, only to discover that the neighbours are aliens masquerading as suburbanites. Debbie (Jami Gertz) and Marty Weaver (Lenny Venito) recently bought a home in Hidden Hills, a coveted gated community in New Jersey, to provide a better life for their three kids. It’s clear from day one that the residents of Hidden Hills are a little different. For starters, their new neighbors all have pro-athlete names like Reggie Jackson (Tim Jo), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye), Dick Butkis (Ian Patrick) and Larry Bird (Simon Templeman). To their horror, the Weavers soon learn that the entire community is comprised of aliens from Zabvron masquerading as suburbanites where the men bear children and everyone cries green goo from their ears. Two worlds collide with hilarious consequences as everyone discovers they can “totally relate” and learn a lot from each other.

THE NEW NORMAL
The first comedy series from acclaimed producer/director Ryan Murphy (GLEE and AMERICAN HORROR STORY), THE NEW NORMAL is a hilarious and heart-warming look at what happens when two gay guys enlist a Midwestern single mother as their surrogate baby mama. Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha) are a Beverly Hills couple who have successful careers and a committed and loving partnership. But there is one thing missing – a baby. Just when they think the stars will never align, an extraordinary young woman enters their life. Looking to escape her dead-end life and small-minded grandmother (Ellen Barkin), Goldie (Georgia King), a Midwestern waitress and single mother decides to change everything and move to L.A. with her precocious 8-year-old daughter. Desperate and broke, Goldie quickly becomes the guys’ surrogate and quite possibly the girl of their dreams.

DO NO HARM
In DO NO HARM, Dr. Jason Cole (Steven Pasquale) is a brilliant neurosurgeon battling a borderline sociopathic personality that wreaks havoc in his life. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic. This dangerous alternate personality goes by the name of ‘Ian Price.’ For years Jason has battled Ian, keeping him in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now resistant to the serum, Ian is free once again and is hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, coworkers and even the woman he loves – he’s got to stop Ian once and for all. Midseason

GOLDEN BOY
Cop-drama GOLDEN BOY follows the meteoric rise of an ambitious NYC officer, Walter William Clark, Jr. (Theo James), who becomes the youngest police commissioner in the history of New York City. During an interview, Clark reflects on his hard-fought journey from street kid to the most powerful man in law enforcement after only three years as a beat cop. Disappointed to be partnered with veteran Detective Don Owen (Chi McBride), a gruff lifer just two years shy of retirement, Clark would rather team with first grade detective Christian Arroyo (Kevin Alejandro), the alpha dog in the squad who shares his ambitions. Arroyo’s partner is Detective Deborah McKenzie (Bonnie Somerville), a tough third-generation cop and the only female detective in the unit. Though laser-focused on moving up the ladder, Clark’s soft spot is serving as the sole caregiver and supporter of his sister, Agnes (Stella Maeve), a teenager demonstrating increasingly dangerous behaviour.  Keenly observant and politically savvy, “Golden Boy” Clark bases his career decisions solely on his need to succeed as quickly as possible, but he’ll soon find that his epic journey is filled with consequences. Midseason
