— The Young and the Restless’ Kristoff St. John (Neil) and Tatyana Ali (Roxanne) won NAACP Image Awards this past weekend in the daytime drama categories.
St. John won the Outstanding Actor category where he was up against Aaron D. Spears (Justin, B&B), Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter, B&B), Redaric Williams (Tyler, Y&R) and Tequan Richmond (TJ, GH). This year’s award marks St. John’s 8th win since the category was introduced in 1996.
Ali won the Outstanding Actress category where she was nominated alongside Angell Conwell (Leslie, Y&R), Christel Khalil (Lily, Y&R), Karla Mosley (Maya, B&B) and Kristolyn Lloyd (Dayzee, B&B). This year’s award marks the actresses fourth consecutive win.
While Ali and her character, Roxy, have been well received by the Y&R audience, many fans and critics felt that an actress of her caliber deserved far more story than she actually had. Since her introduction in 2007, Roxy has served as the often mentioned but barely seen girlfriend of Devon Winters (Bryton James). Roxy appeared in only 6 episodes in 2013, far less than her fellow Y&R nominees – where Conwell appeared in 86 episodes and Khalil appeared in 88.
While the soap suffered writing changes this past year, there’s no reason why the character of Roxy couldn’t have been given a storyline, especially since her boyfriend Devon inherited a bulk of the late Katherine Chancellor’s (Jeanne Cooper) fortune. In fact, that story wasn’t played upon until recently when Devon broke up with Roxy after he wrongly accused her of overcharging her credit cards. In fact, Devon has yet to reach out to Roxy, with who he was in a committed relationship for over four years when he found out that that Mason (Lamon Archey) was the person behind the credit card fraud.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum’s character hasn’t even been given a last name despite appearing on the soap for almost seven years. While she’s appeared on Second Generation Wayans and Love That Girl! these past couples of years, Ali seems game for more work at Y&R.
So what gives CBS/Sony? How many NAACP Image Awards does Tatyana Ali need to win before she’s given a proper storyline on The Young and the Restless?

Rants & Raves:
- General Hospital: St. Jason strikes again. While I understand Jason would go off and save Robin if the situation were reversed, would Jason really want Robin to leave her family once again and work on unleashing the frozen Cassadines? Let’s think about that one… Couldn’t help but laugh when TJ wanted to take Molly on the same floor her daddy took big half-sis Sam on. Back to the Robin/Patrick stuff – how many more tears does Jason Thompson need to shed? Poor guy has been crying for two years now.
- The Young and the Restless: Y&R’s hostage crisis last week had me on the edge of my seat…good job! The chandelier crashing on Billy and his marriage provided some much needed character-driven drama. But why oh why are Lauren and Michael back at the police station?
