Canadian media giants Rogers and Shaw are teaming up to take on Netflix with a new subscription video-on-demand service, shomi.

Launching the first week of November to Rogers and Shaw Internet and TV customers, shomi will feature some of the most popular TV shows past and present as well as fan-favourite films.

Initial past-streaming rights include Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy, Sleepy Hollow, Shameless, 2 Broke Girls, Vikings, New Girl, 24: Live Another Day, Chicago Fire, The Strain and American Horror Story – pretty much titles currently airing and streaming on Rogers and Shaw owned stations (City, FX Canada, Global, Showcase).

The service will be priced at $8.99, the same as Netflix Canada. For launch, shomi will be available on tablet, online, mobile, set top boxes (your Rogers digital cable box) and Xbox 360.

At launch, shomi, “created for entertainment lovers by entertainment lovers,” will feature 14,000 episodes and titles – with 340 TV series and 30% of Canadian content.

A full list of titles will be disclosed closer to launch. Check out www.shomi.com for more information.
