We went over our returning favourites, but now check out my picks for this fall season’s 10 new shows, including GothamMarry MeMulaneyGracepoint and more!

gotham tv show

Gotham

Premieres: Monday, September 22 at 8 p.m. on CTV and Fox

Familiar faces: Ben McKenzie (The O.C.), Donal Logue (Vikings) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Hawthorne).

What’s it about: The origin story of DC Comics’ Commission Gordon as he befriends a young Bruce Wayne after his parents are gunned down. Gotham will follow the rise of the legendary super-villains featured in the Batman comic book series including the Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and more.

The deal: Definitely my top pick. Although after watching the pilot, I’m a little worried that the show might focus too much at introducing the future super-villains a little too quickly. Definitely worth a season’s pass on your PVR.

how to get away with murder tv show

How to Get Away with Murder

Premieres: Thursday, September 25 at 10 p.m. on CTV and ABC

Familiar faces: Viola Davis (The Help) and Liza Weil (Gilmore Girls).

What’s it about: Davis stars as a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who happens to get caught up in a murder plot along with her students.

The deal: Thursday is Shonda Rhimes night on ABC. The pilot had a few twists, but it’ll be interesting how they keep it up in the upcoming episodes. I’ll wait until the end of episode of three to see if I’m staying.

the honourable woman tv show

The Honourable Woman

Premieres: Monday, September 29 at 9 p.m. on CBC; continues to air Tuesdays at 9 p.m.

Familiar faces: Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) and Eve Best (Nurse Jackie).

What’s it about: A woman’s journey to right the wrongs conducted in a past life, set against the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The deal: The mini-series (eight epidodes) premiered in the UK and US this past summer (BBC and Sundance TV) and won rave reviews (especially from The Guardian). CBC’s scripted thriller might be your best bet in a sea of comedy offerings on a Tuesday night.

manhattan love story tv show

Manhattan Love Story

Premieres: Tuesday, September 30 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC

Familiar faces: Jake McDorman (Shameless), Kurt Fuller (Scandal).

What’s it about: About a new couple at the start of their relationship, set in Manhattan.

The deal: A lot of talk about Selfie, so why not stick around ABC and try this one out?

gracepoint tv show

Gracepoint

Premieres: Thursday, October 2 at 9 p.m. on Global and Fox

Familiar faces: David Tennant (Broadchurch), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Nick Nolte (Luck), Michael Pena (American Hustle) and Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl).

What’s it about: The American version of the hit UK series Broadchurch, which follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach. The picturesque seaside town is now at the heart of a major police investigation and media frenzy.

The deal: They’ve brought over Tennant for the 10-episode “event series” adaptation. It’s sure to be a hit and has a stellar cast. Definitely set your PVR.

a to z tv show

A to Z

Premieres: Thursday, October 2 at 9:30 p.m. on NBC. Global’s also picked up the series, but no news yet when it will air on TV, but I’m hearing they’ll make the episodes available online beginning Oct. 2.

Familiar faces: Ben Feldman (Mad Men), Christine Milioti (How I Met Your Mother). Behind-the-scenes, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack serve as executive producers while Katey Sagal narrates.

What’s it about: Andrew finds the girl of his dreams, Zelda.

The deal: It’s supposed to chronicle the start and end of their relationship – but you are actually rooting for them (at least I was in the pilot).

mulaney tv show

Mulaney

Premieres: Sunday, October 5 at 7 p.m. on Global (in pre-release); also airs Sunday at 9:30 p.m. on Fox

Familiar faces: John Mulaney (Saturday Night Live, Best Week Ever), Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live), Elliot Gould (Friends) and Martin Short (SCTV).

What’s it about: Comedian John Mulaney stars in a fictionalized version of himself (like Seinfeld), who lives in New York and is hired as a writer by a legendary comedian and game show host (Short).

The deal: Mulaney is hilarious and this will probably be another project that NBC wish they hadn’t passed on (see The Mindy Project).

the flash tv show

The Flash

Premieres: Tuesday, October 7 at 8 p.m. on CTV and The CW

Familiar faces: Grant Gustin (Glee), Tom Cavanagh (Ed) and John Wesley Shipp (the 90s Flash series; Dawson’s Creek).

What’s it about: Based on the DC Comics character Flash (aka Barry Allen). Spin-off of Arrow.

The deal: Solid pilot. Same team as Arrow, so it’s sure to be a hit.

the affair tv show

The Affair

Premieres: Sunday, October 12 at 10 p.m. on The Movie Network and Showtime

Familiar faces: Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek), Maura Tierney (ER) and Dominic West (The Wire).

What’s it about: The cable series will explore the emotional and psychological effects of an extramarital affairs. Alison (Ruth Wilson) is a waitress who begins an affair with Noah (West), a school teacher/novelist. Tierney stars as Noah’s wife Helen, while Jackson stars as Alison’s husband, Cole.

Marry Me

Premieres: Tuesday, October 14 at 9 p.m. on NBC; also airs on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. on Global

Familiar faces: Ken Marino (Veronica Mars; Party Down) and Casey Wilson (Happy Endings).

What’s it about: Jake and Annie finally get engaged about six years of dating.

The deal: Both the leads are amazing. The show is also loosely based on (series creator) David Caspe’s recent marriage to Wilson. Definitely for you if you loved Happy Endings.
