Rogers Media’s City has announced it’s slate of programming for the 2016-2017 television season. The Canadian network has loaded up on more comedy (acquire The Odd Couple from CTV) and reboots — 24: Legacy and Prison Break (Global aired original runs for both series.
City has also announced two new original scripted series, Second Jen and Bad Blood: The Vito Rizzuto Story. Second Jen is a coming-of-age story about two second-generation Chinese and Filipino-Canadian millennial who are best friends and expressing all of life’s “firsts.” The shows creators Samantha Wan (Sudden Master) and Amanda Joy (Trapped in Terra) will also star in the series. The series will premiere on Citytv.com this fall and then move to television (City and OMNI) at a later date.
Bad Blood: The Vito Rizzuto Story will be a limited event series making its debut on both City and FX Canada in 2017. Casting has yet to be announced. Logline from City: “While imprisoned in Colorado’s Supermax Prison for the murders of three Bonanno family members, Rizzuto watches helplessly as the thriving empire he built is dismantled, and his closest friends and family members are mysteriously murdered one by when. When Rizzuto is finally released from prison, a Shakespearean-level revenge tale plays out – leading to the brutal murders of his closest companions, and ultimately the death of Rizzuto himself. Michael Konyves (Barney’s Version) and Simon Barry (Van Helsing) serve as executive producers.
City will also new Viceland Canada series Nirvanna, The Band, The Show, a 10-party 30-minute comedy series following two lifelong best friends and roommates (Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol) as they plan the greatest musical act in the history of the modern world. Without ever playing a note, Nirvanna The Band will take Toronto by storm, one scheme at a time. City will also broadcast Fox’s remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Empire moved over to shomi this past midseason and will not be airing on City this fall.
