— The Young and the Restless is working with the American Heart Association on a new storyline about women’s heart diseases, which is the number one killer of women in the United States. Last week’s episodes featured Jill Foster Abbott Atkinson (played by Daytime Emmy winner Jess Walton) being hospitalized after suffering a heart attack.

The storyline, penned by new head writer Sally Sussman, not only spread awareness of the disease but has featured stellar performances by Walton as well as Jason Thompson, who assumed the role of Jill’s son Billy a year ago. The dramatic scenes between mother and son were praised by longtime viewers as many previous writing regimes ignored the complicated mother/son dynamic between these characters.

Following the Feb. 15 episode (Canadian airdate), a PSA featuring Jess Walton ran, encouraging viewers to visit American Heart Association’s heart.org to learn how to manage risks and recognize the warning signs of a heart attack. (Watch it above.)
