Sundance Now officially launched in Canada this past week.

The new ad-free streaming platform from AMC Networks celebrates and embraces new and diverse creative voices, with a mission to bring to its audience the best in groundbreaking entertainment that have a point of view and make a lasting impact. The service launched in the U.S. back in 2014.

A media event was held in Toronto on Wednesday (March 23) night at the AGO with curator George Schmalz and General Manager of Sundance Now and the U.S.’ Sundance TV’s Jan Diedrichsen.

For TV fans, the service launches with acclaimed French political thriller The Bureau’s first two seasons (Season 3 to debut in the summer) as well as Travel Man starring British comedian Richard Ayoade as he travels across the globe with celebrity guests like Chris O’Dowd (his co-star from The IT Crowd) and Paul Rudd.

Highlighted doc Gaza Surf Club will premiere on the platform on March 31. It will join a slate of acclaimed films like Living in Oblivion, Hoop Dreams, Daddy Longlegs, Uncle Kent 2, Always Shine, Off the Rails, Frances Ha, The Lifeguard and Savage Grace. There’s even cult classics, like Heathers and Y Tu Mama Tambien.

Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald’s specially curated collection will launch next week. “I’m thrilled that Sundance Now has asked me to be part of their official Canadian launch. My collection is very special to me, s it represents a distinct voice in the independent and doc filmmaking scene,” says McDonald of his collaboration with Sundance Now. “Sundance Now has done an excellent job of representing Canadian filmmakers on their platform, and I’m thrilled that it is now available in Canada.”

Sundance Now is definitely the type of programming, highlighted from the Utah film festival, that many Canadian cable subscribers wish they’d be able to see on Corus Entertainment’s Sundance Channel.

The service will cost $6.99 a month or $59.99 for a yearly membership. Canadian subscribers will also get member perks, such as VIP invites and free tickets to Hot Docs in Toronto. Subscribers can log on to sundancenow.com or download the iOS and Android apps, which can be cast to Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku. A one-week trial is available.
