CBS All Access has launched in Canada. Launched in October 2014 in the U.S., the streaming service was available to Canadians on April 23 for $5.99, following a free month-long trial. CBS All Access’ arrival in Canada last week marked the digital subscription service’s first international expansion.
“The launch of CBS All Access in Canada is a significant milestone for the service,” said Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive. “We’ve experienced incredible growth domestically and see a great opportunity to bring the service and CBS’ renowned programming directly to international audiences across a range of platforms and devices. We look forward to continuing to expand CBS All Access across additional platforms, with even more content, and bringing the service to other markets around the world.”
Canadians can access more than 7,500 commercial-free episodes on demand at www.cbsallaccess.ca, on iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices, as well as on Apple TV and Chromecast. The streaming services will look to launch on other connected devices in the coming months.
Current programming includes current seasons of primetime hits NCIS, Bull, Seal Team, MacGyver and Instinct. CBS All Access also offers the complete library of NCIS, Survivor, Elementary and Madam Secretary. Daytime and late-night talk programs currently available include The Talk, Rachael Ray and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. There are also more than 30 classic series available, including Beverly Hills 90210, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, both versions of Melrose Place, Girlfriends, Charmed, The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-0 and CSI.
The latest episodes of Entertainment Tonight and 60 Minutes are also available.
Noticeably absent are CBS daytime soaps The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. In Canada, streaming rights for those programs are available through Global GO (Y&R) and CTV GO (B&B).
As for CBS All Access originals, Canadians can stream the first season of The Good Fight (while the second season is currently airing on Corus Entertainment’s W Network). The first season of comedy No Activity is also available. Meanwhile, Bell Media holds digital and linear rights to Star Trek: Discovery, where the first season is now available on CraveTV with the second season set to debut on Space the same time it premieres on CBS All Access in the U.S.
Also available to Canadians through CBS All Access is the CBSN livestream, CBS News’ 24/7 news service which includes live, anchored coverage and original reporting.
For Canadian viewers who have enjoyed exploring Netflix’s offering of programming while in the United States with the same app and account, it should be noted that the Canadian version of CBS All Access is a separate app and will not work in the U.S.
No word yet if CBS All Access’ new series Strange Angel will be available through the streaming service in Canada when it launches in the U.S. on June 14. The drama series based on George Pendle’s book inspired by the real-life story of Jack Parsons explores the dramatic intersection between genius and madness, science and science fiction. The series stars Jack Reynor and Rupert Friend.
