best and worst soap moments 2018

Here’s a rundown of the best and worst soap moments that The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital and The Young and the Restless had to offer in 2018!

best and worst soap moments 2018

Best New Couple: Ciara & Ben (Days of our Lives)

She’s the daughter of one of the shows most legendary super couples. He’s a reformed serial killer. It seems ridiculous but Victoria Konefal and Robert Scott Wilson’s electric chemistry make this the hottest young soap pairing in years.

Worst Triangle: Drew/Sam/Jason (General Hospital)

So what exactly was Steve Burton brought back for?

Worst Breakup: Maya and Rick (The Bold and the Beautiful)

It happened off-screen and we lost Jacob Young.

Best Baby Switch: Nelle Switches Her Own Baby (General Hospital)

Nasty Nelle was the best Nelle. Sad that Chloe Lanier left just when things got good and her character switched her and Michael’s (Chad Duel), giving it to Brad (Parry Shen) and Lucas (Ryan Carnes) to raise.

Worst Retcon: Peter August (General Hospital)

It’s insulting to longtime viewers to have them believe that Anna (Finola Hughes) slept with Faison (Anders Hove) — let alone, have her go through with that pregnancy and keep it a secret all these years. Here’s hoping we find out that August is actually Alex’s son and Anna’s just confused due to “mind-mapping.”

Best Mystery: Who Shot Bill (The Bold and the Beautiful)

Bill’s (Don Diamont) was a welcome story on B&B as it didn’t depend on tired triangles and it kept us guessing on who the culprit was — it was Taylor, but more on that below…

Why Now: Taylor Returns (The Bold and the Beautiful)

So you don’t bring Hunter Tylo back as Taylor to play out Sheila’s (Kimberlin Brown) return last year but decide to bring her back to shoot Bill (Don Diamont) and whatever is going on with Wayne Brady? K.

Best Recast: Stacy Haiduk as Susan & Kristen (Days of our Lives)

Stacy Haiduk managed to make both roles her own. We love Eileen Davidson but if we couldn’t have her reprise her iconic roles, we’re glad the show cast Haiduk.

Worst Paternity Story: Jack (The Young and the Restless)

This sure was something. They kept teasing us that Jack’s (Peter Bergman) biological father was Arthur Miller — Victor’s (Eric Braeden) pop. It was a useless story but it sure did give Eileen Davidson’s Ashley a good exit story. She took advantage of Dina (Marla Adams) Alzheimer’s and played the entire Abbott family to teach Jacky a lesson. In the end, Jack’s still John Abbott’s son.

Best Flashbacks: General Hospital

What better way to showcase the current writing regime’s lack of longterm story-planning than by airing episodes from 1997 and even 2005!

Worst Story: J.T.’s Return & Murder (The Young and the Restless)

Bringing a fan-favourite like J.T. (Thad Luckinbill) back and making him abusive is one thing, but then having Victoria (Amelia Heinle), Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Sharon (Sharon Case) and Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) murder him and cover up their crime is another. LOL also making “Poor Girl” Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) blackmail them months later? Ridiculous. This crap story is still onscreen and should have been finished months ago.

Best Umbrella Story: John & Marlena’s Wedding (Days of our Lives)

Speaking of story-planning… We had the set-up, the returns (Alison Sweeney, Martha Madison, Brandon Beemer), Will (Chandler Massey) got his memory back, the gunfire and then Nashville (Nicole’s death; Sarah’s re-introduction)!

Worst Exit: Mishael Morgan’s Hilary is Killed Off (The Young and the Restless)

Why give Hilary and Devon (Bryton James) fans a reunion, a pregnancy, only to destroy it like this? And for what? Such a shame.

Worst Treatment of Vets: The Young and the Restless

Mishael Morgan’s exit wasn’t the only one to anger Y&R fans. The mistreatment of Eileen Davidson (Ashley) and Doug Davidson (Paul) still makes zero sense. Instead, we get a wave of new characters (like the Rosales family) which do put the “young” back in The Young and the Restless but at what expense? Why not introduce them gradually. Especially when it comes to Nate (Brooks Darnell), the son of an established vet like Tonya Lee Williams’ Olivia was nowhere to be found. Whatever happened to Kristoff St. John’s Neil anyway?  Disrespecting fans and veteran actors easily make Y&R the most disappointing soap right now. Hopefully, the new regime will correct these mistakes in 2019.

Best Show: Days of our Lives

DAYS manages to keep things fresh in each episode all year-long. Some of the newer characters are fresh and hilarious like Greg Rikaart’s Leo and T-Boz’s Sheila. Kate Mansi returned as Abigail in the midst of a big story effortlessly. Susan Seaforth Hayes’ Julie got some great stuff for her own 50th anniversary and now we’re gearing up for the return of Matthew Ashford’s Jack! Days of our Lives is once again the soap that is in its best shape going into a new year.
