Laura Roberts, the judicial clerk from Calgary, Alberta, was the first houseguest to be evicted from Big Brother Canada’s seventh season on Thursday (March 7) night, following a unanimous vote.
We caught up with Laura following her eviction to see if she felt a bit “cheated” for not being able to play for the veto, who she thinks orchestrated her eviction, and what she wishes fans got to see on the live feeds.
Did you feel cheated in a way for not getting a chance to play for the Power of Veto? Seemed unfair, especially in the first week!
Not being able to play for the veto was a lot more surprising, not only to myself, but to everyone in the house… Especially during the first week based on the fact that most of the time you are going up on the block, you’re really going off of very limited information. So [during that first week] any reason people can find to put you up there, they’ll use. However, that’s part of the Big Brother experience. Every season is different. Every set of roommates is different. Things happen when they’re supposed to. It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get to take myself off the block, especially when I knew it was written at that point, it is what it is… That’s part of the whole thing.
If you had a moment to speak with Cory before she went into the house, what advice would you have given her based on your interactions with the other houseguests in the short time you were in the house?
The advice that I would give a new roommate going into that house would be very much “foster your social relationships.” Big Brother is a very emotional game and I think that the more people like you, it’s a lot more difficult for them to get rid of you. So, foster your social relationships and keep your cards close to your chest. It’s very easy to start spinning in the Big Brother house and get anxiety or paranoid. Keep that under control. We were a real tight-knit group and a new player coming in might have a tough time at first, but the stuff I mentioned will help them going forward.
While you may have been outspoken, Damien seemed like a physical threat. What do you think swayed the entire house to vote you out instead? Is there anyone you think had a major role in orchestrating your eviction?
I think that the people who had the biggest role in orchestrating my eviction would have been Adam and Sam. Especially so early on when you are going on limited information. Maybe not so much Sam, but Adam is definitely very much a physical threat, so people were afraid that if they crossed the boundary with them, they’d be next on the block after them. I think what ultimately swayed people to vote me out, regardless of the situations with Sam and Adam, it’s the fact that when you are somebody like myself, who is not afraid to do things or say things and really speak your mind and be authentic, you are kind of a wild card… People don’t know what you’re going to do next when you don’t have a threshold. I think that makes people nervous because if I’m going to put myself in front of 13 people and call myself out, you better believe I’m going to call you out too!
Viewers haven’t had the chance to watch the live feeds yet, was there a moment from your time in the house that you wish they got to see?
I wish that viewers got a chance to see the very beginning… When I first walked into the house, Sam had pulled Chelsea and myself into the bathroom and flat out said, “I want to make an alliance with you guys. I want it to be us. Women at the end. Forget these guys! Forget these men.” We made a pact early on and as soon as Adam won Head of Household and clung to him the way that she did, she dropped Chelsea and I. That particular situation is what spiraled her being my target and getting me so angry and outspoken so early on. It’s not usually the game I play, and I wish that more people got to see that backstory.
Was there a particular houseguest that you had a chance to form a meaningful connection or friendship with?
The most meaningful friendships that I built while I was in the Big Brother Canada house would definitely have been with Eddie, Kailyn, and Anthony. Those guys were my people. I truly believe that if we had met outside of being roommates, we would have been friends in real life. I have the most respect for them. If you guys fall in love with them on television, you can imagine falling in love with them in real life! I cannot wait to see them again.
