Great news for music competition fans in Canada. Rogers Media will be bringing popular European music contest Eurovision to Canadians beginning May 14.
Airing on OMNI.1 and streaming nationally on OMNITV.ca, the Eurovision Song Contest has Europeans “compete for the glass microphone, a lifetime of fame and glory, and the chance to be named the best song in Europe.”
This year’s edition will have 41 countries compete with each other in Tel Aviv, Israel – there will be songs in 18 different languages. “OMNI is thrilled to bring the Eurovision Song Contest to Canadian viewers,” said Manuel Fonseca, Director of OMNI Lifestyle and Entertainment Production, Rogers Media. “As the world’s premier international music competition, the Eurovision Song Contest is the perfect complement to a dynamic programming schedule that offers our multilingual audiences even more world-class entertainment content.”
The 64th Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted by supermodel Bar Refaeli, television host Erez Tal, Israeli television host and screenwriter Assi Azar and YouTube star Lucy Ayoub. Previous contests have included performances by Celine Dion, ABBA, Enya, Olivia Newtown-John, Cliff Richard, and Julio Iglesias.
The winner of the song contest is chosen through two Semi-Finals and a Grand Final. Six countries are automatically pre-qualified for the Grand Final (the “Big Five” which are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the host country, Israel). Each act must sing live and only the countries participating in the contest are permitted to vote (sorry, Canada!).
The Eurovision Song Contest will be broadcast on:
- Tuesday, May 14 (9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET) – Semi-Final 1
- Thursday, May 16 (9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET) – Semi-Final 2
- Saturday, May 18 (9 p.m. to 1 a.m. – Grand Final
