CBC Announces 2021-2022 Programming Schedule

CBC announced its plan for the upcoming 2021-2022 broadcast season on Tuesday, June 2.

Returning dramas include Coroner, Diggstown, Heartland, Murdoch Mysteries and Pretty Hard Cases. CBC has also partnered with BET+ on 1920s drama The Porter, about the truth story of railway workers from both Canada and the United States. Dramedy Moonshine, starring Jennifer Finnigan, about a dysfunctional group of half-siblings battling control of a summer resort in Nova Scotia.

Another dramatic comedy, Sort Of, about a fluid millennial who straddles various identities will premiere on CBC Gem a month before it debuts on broadcast. The series is produced by Bilal Baig (who also stars) and Fab Filippo.

Kim’s Convenience spin-off Strays (starring Nicole Power) is also new to the network’s comedy slate, along with Andrew Phung’s Run the Burbs, about a young family living life to the fullest in the suburbs, and Son of Critch, which is based on the award-winning memoir from Mark Critch. These new comedies join returning series Tallboyz, This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Workin’ Moms. Returning comedy festivals include Ha!ifax Comedy Fest, The New Wave of Standup and the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.

Coronation Street will continue to air weekdays while the second season of World of the War will premiere this fall. Mira Nair’s A Suitable Boy, which was broadcast on broadcast in the UK last year and first made its way to Canada in December on Acorn TV, will also air on CBC this fall. The second season of ITV’s Victoria will also air this fall.

CBC has also greenlit new Indigenous investigative series The Red from Métis creator and writer Marie Clements and will star Sarah Podemski and Sarah Gadon and will be ready for the 2022-2023 season.

Bay of Fundy sand sculpture series Race Against the Tide hosted by Shaun Majumder joins returning factual shows Arctic Vets, Dragons’ Den, Family Feud Canada, The Great Canadian Baking Show and Still Standing.

Documentary programming includes The Passionate Eye, The Nature of Things, Hot Docs, as well as Harold Ballard: Power Player directed by Jason Priestley, Spirit to Soar directed by Tanya Talaga and Michelle Derosier, and Superfan which focuses on Nav Bhatia and is directed by Amar Wala.

CBC Gem’s slate of short-form series include Jensplaining, Next Stop, True Dating Stories, Frick I Love Nature, Hello (Again), Revenge of the Black Best Friend, and Who Do You Think I Am?
