My TV picks this week are new and returning British series including Extraordinary (on Disney+), The Gentlemen (Netflix), The Great British Baking Show (CBC Gem), and Juice (CBC Gem).
Oscar-nominated films Anatomy of a Fall and American Fiction hit Prime Video this Friday (March 8) ahead of the Academy Awards this Sunday (March 10).
Extraordinary (Season 2)
Disney+’s award-winning British series Extraordinary returned for a second season this past Wednesday (March 6). The new season picks up where season one left off as Jen (Máiréad Tyers) enrols at the power client and she soon discovers that the process of finding her power isn’t as easy as she hoped. Meanwhile, Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) has an unexpected revelation about his past, and then Kash (Bilal Hasna) and Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) attempt to be totally mature and dignified about their breakups – which isn’t easy as they’re still living under the same roof.
Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls) returns as Jen’s mum, Mary. All eight episodes of Extraordinary’s second season are now streaming on Disney+ in Canada.
Supersex
Inspired by the real life of Rocco Siffredi, this Italian series reveals how and when Rocco Tano, a simple guy from Ortona became the most famous pornstar in the world.
Alessandro Borghi stars as Rocco. All seven episodes of Supersex are now streaming on Netflix in Canada.
The Gentlemen
Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen dropped this past Thursday (March 8) and is set in the same world as Ritchie’s 2019 feature film.
Starring Theo James (White Lotus), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Daniel Ings (The Crown), Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), The Gentlemen sees Eddie Horniman (James) unexpectedly inherit his father’s sizeable country estate, only to discover it’s part of a cannabis empire.
All seven episodes of The Gentlemen are now streaming on Netflix in Canada.
The Great British Baking Show (Season 14)
The latest season, which premiered last fall in the U.K. (where it’s called The Great British Bake Off), sees Alison Hammond join the cast where passionate amateur baking fans compete to be crowned as the U.K.’s “Best Amateur Baker.”
All ten episodes of The Great British Baking Show’s fourteenth season are now streaming on CBC Gem in Canada.
Juice
Mawaan Rizwan (Sex Education) BBC series Juice is about Jamma, who is on a quest for attention and has to navigate chaotic family dynamics and literally stumbles through love. Russel Tovey (Being Human) also stars.
All six episodes of Juice are now streaming on CBC Gem in Canada.
Anatomy of a Fall
Academy Award-nominee Sandra Hüller stars in Anatomy of a Fall, which is now streaming on Prime Video in Canada.
The crime thriller tells the tale of a woman suspected of her husband’s murder, and their partially sighted son who faces a moral dilemma as the main witness.
American Fiction
Academy Award-nominated American Fiction is also available to stream on Prime Video in Canada.
The film, which won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF, stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K. Brown, Jeffrey Wright, and John Ortiz. Monk (Wright), a frustrated novelist is fed up with the establishment profiting from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write his own outlandish Black book that propels him into the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
