This past weekend, Canadian music icon Chantal Kreviazuk had the profound honour of inducting her “sister” and long-time collaborator, Dr. Samantha Nutt, into Canada’s Walk of Fame. I caught up with Chantal on the red carpet to discuss the deep personal connection that defines their work with War Child Canada and beyond. We also touched on her reflections on her husband Raine Maida’s band Our Lady Peace‘s induction, her return to the studio, and fond memories of the ’90s rock scene. Don’t miss these heartfelt moments when Canada’s Walk of Fame 2025 airs on CBC this Canada Day!
Tonight, you have the incredible honour of presenting Dr. Samantha Nutt with her induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame. Given your profound and long-standing connection through War Child Canada, what does this moment mean to you personally?
[It’s] incredible. It’s interesting – she’s [like] my sister, so we have this very fluid thing where we’re like in a war zone and then we’re drinking wine, and then we’re dancing, and then we’re doing karaoke. We’re raising our children together…I don’t know, it’s hard to explain – it’s [a] very special [relationship]. It’s a very unique discovery of each other.
She’s become by bestie, but also my teacher in a way.
You’re back in the studio! I saw that you’re recording some of the songs that others have recorded.
Yes! You’ve done your research.
When can we expect to listen to that?
Very soon! I hope to start dropping some of the songs soon.
One of my projects is done – new originals. And this other one is just being completed now.
The late ‘90s were a huge moment for women in rock. From Lilith Fair to topping the charts on MuchMusic, what are some of your fondest memories from that time?
It was exciting, you know… I didn’t have kids, and everything just seemed like such a big deal and then I got older, had children and now I’m like, “Who’s ringing the doorbell back home for the Uber Eats?” You know, everything’s different!
I have a special place in my heart for that time because it was like everything was new and exciting, and yeah, now I feel that more from my own children.
You and Raine have both been such prominent voices in Canadian music for so long. As Our Lady Peace is inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, what reflections do you have on their journey?
I’m so proud of him! I think with both Sam and my husband, the trick is that the journey is a marathon. It’s not a sprint. And the reason that these incredible people are being honoured is because they never gave up and they stayed in their purpose. So, that’s inspiring to me!
Thank you so much. We hope to see you inducted as well, real soon!
[Laughs] No, I don’t know! As long as it’s not posthumous, then just don’t even give it to me!
Canada’s Walk of Fame 2025 will air Tuesday, July 1 at 7 p.m. (7:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.
