What to Watch: You Can See Everything The Diplomat, Ludwig and More
Whether you are looking to dive back into the high-stakes political chaos with Keri Russell in the fourth season of The Diplomat or head to the theatres for Nathan Fielder’s new cinematic portrait of Elizabeth Holmes, this weekend’s lineup delivers an incredible mix of prestige television and major big-screen releases.
Streaming heavyweights joining Netflix’s The Diplomat are Paul Bettany’s return in Marvel’s VisionQuest alongside cozy British mystery returns like Ludwig, and brand-new horror drop Crystal Lake. Here’s The TV Watercooler’s guide to the latest streaming premieres, theatrical releases, and weekend binges.
· The Diplomat returns for its fourth season with two marriages threatening to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler (Kerri Russell) brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Penn (Allison Janney) and VP Wyler’s (Rufus Sewell) conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the US toward war. Premiered on Wednesday, Oct. 14 on Netflix.
· Peep Show’s David Mitchell returns as the brilliant but endearingly awkward puzzlemaster for a second season of Ludwig. Now an official police consultant tackling a new slate of seemingly impossible crimes, John “Ludwig” Taylor continues to search for his missing twin brother alongside Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), as one masquerade ends and another begins. The second season of Ludwig premiered on BritBox in Canada on Oct. 13.
· Canadians looking for Peacock’s Crystal Lake can catch it on Crave. Linda Cardellini stars – A dark secret from Pamela Voorhees' past emerges after her son's death, just as bodies begin turning up across the quiet town of Crystal Lake. All 8 episodes dropped on Thursday, Oct. 15.
· Also new this week is Disney+’s VisionQuest (Oct. 14). Vision (Paul Bettany) is faced with many challenges while trying to regain his memory and humanity. The Marvel series also stars James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, Diane Morgan, Emily Hampshire, and James D’Arcy.
· James Norton hosts Saturday Night Live UK with musical guest The Streets this Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 p.m. on the CTV Comedy Channel (streams next day on Crave).
· Saturday Night Live is on hiatus this week, but Netflix has two specials for those fans. Current Weekend Update anchor Michael Che has a new standup special, Shot in Minnesota, and a long-awaited documentary Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald.
· Nathan Fielder’s You Can See Everything this theatres this weekend. Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes invites Fielder and his crew to document her every move. What begins as an intimate portrait becomes a mind-bending three-year journey told in a nearly 3-hour runtime. If you want to prepare for the doc, check out The Dropout on Disney+.
· The latest take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility also premieres this weekend with Daisy Edgar-Jones, George MacKay, Caitriona Balfe and Fiona Shaw.
· If you want something totally different, there’s Street Fighter with 50 Cent, Jason Momoa, and Noah Centineo. Ryu and Ken reunite when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. As they face a hidden conspiracy, they must confront each other and their past-or face destruction.
