British soap fans in Canada are saying goodbye to Albert Square. EastEnders has aired its final new episode on One TV, leaving many viewers wondering how they can keep up with the drama.
The last new episode aired on Thursday, August 28, with a final omnibus of the week’s episodes airing this Sunday. For some time, One TV has been broadcasting the popular show, with episodes airing roughly four weeks after their debut on BBC One in the U.K.
For a long time, the soap has been a familiar presence on Canadian television. It first aired on the now-defunct BBC Canada, then moved to Zoomer Media’s VisionTV before landing on sister channel One TV. While Emmerdale, another beloved U.K. soap, will continue to air on One TV, the departure of EastEnders marks the end of an era for the series on Canadian cable.
Although EastEnders recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, the show’s future in Canada is currently uncertain. Canadian fans can still hold out hope that the show will find a new home. Both BritBox, which streams the series in the U.S., and BBC First, which airs other popular BBC shows like The Graham Norton Show, are potential landing spots. However, a representative for BritBox has stated that there’s no news to share at this time regarding the show’s availability on their Canadian platform.
