Cooler Talk: Glee, 90210 and Big Brother 11

Glee

I was invited to attend Global’s special sneak peak of some upcoming episodes of Glee yesterday and I’m happy to report that Glee is not a one hit wonder. I won’t give away too much because you really should tune in.

Ryan Murphy knows how to pen both comedy and drama (Popular and Nip/Tuck) and he can find the perfect balance between the two – while the musical element enhances them. If musicals aren’t really your thing, don’t let this show turn you off. The music is able to capture the dramatic moments (with songs like “Take A Bow”) as well as the comedic moments (with “Single Ladies”).

I’m really impressed with the cast. I first saw Matthew Morrison on As the World Turns last year and was sad that he had to leave to role in less than a month. Murphy knows how to write for his actors and the perfect example of that is with Jessalyn Gilsig (who previously played Gina on Nip/Tuck) as Terri. I was sad to see Jane Lynch leave Party Down in favor of this show but I have to admit that Lynch makes you love and hate her character so perfectly that I don’t think anyone else could play the role the same way she does. Also happy to see Jennifer Aspen (Daphne on Party of Five) as Will’s sister-in-law.

I’m hoping that they find a way to humanize Terri. She can have a hidden softer side while still being the H.B.I.C…just like Popular’s Nicole or even Nip/Tuck’s Gina.

The “New” 90210

The second season of 90210 premiered last night on The CW (airs Thursday at 10pm on Global) and this marked a new beginning for the show which is now completely under Rebecca Sinclair’s vision. I must say, I do find that there have been some improvements. Let’s start with Annie…I’m so happy that we’re seeing her as the outcast of West Bev. I think everyone was sick of Shanae Grimes being all teeth and smiles last season. Even Dixon is fed up of her attitude and how dare she treat Aunt Becky her mother that way? Speaking of Dixon, I’m liking the hair…very Kanye.

Now let’s move on to Naomi. I’m happy that her character’s become much more layered (in fact, they all are). I like how Naomi squared off against “the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” however her best moment of the episode had to be when she realized she had become what she hates the most: a homewrecker.

Now for the bad…what the producers need to realize is that they can’t take away what lured people into the show in the first place: Jennie Garth’s Kelly Taylor. Enough with the “special guest star” status, put the woman on contract and give her storylines. The show cannot and will not survive just on the new generation. A guest star everyone now and then won’t cut it. How dare you not feature Kelly in the second season premiere? She didn’t even get a mention! Kelly’s the real draw here people and you need to understand that. The Kelly/Silver dynamic should be the base of the show…not the Wilson family. And where was Ryan Matthews? What’s with the new opening credits? While cover of the theme was okay…they need to bring back the cast shots in the opening credits. The sand-drawn logo and opening credits look like they could have been done in iMovie. Also, when did Silver and Naomi become best friends again? I’m also surprised they managed to get rid of Ethan so quickly…Dustin Milligan meanwhile was funny in the film Extract.

Next week’s “sext” episode looks really good. I hope that they decide to take their time with Naomi and Liam. Good television couples take awhile to develop. Just look at Ross & Rachel, Jim & Pam and Kelly & Dylan…no one likes an insta-couple like last season’s Annie & Ethan.

Big Brother

I was really sad to see Michele leave Big Brother last night and I’m not at all surprised that the ratings from Sunday’s episode were down a reportedly 50% since Jeff’s eviction. I really hate Natalie. She’s probably one of the worst players in BB11 history and that’s the general consensus only. I may have “liked” (and I use that term litly, yes, I light-liked Kevin) a few weeks ago but now, he’s just the lesser of two evils.

After the live show, Kevin won the first round of the final HoH competition. Apparently Jordan only lasted four hours and Natalie “fell” after making Kevin promise to take her to final two. At this point, I don’t care if the producers rig the game in an effort to have Jordan win HoH. I’d rather have a rigged game than have Natalie win…actually, if you take a look at the picture, you’ll see that Natalie cheated, one hand is supposed to be ON the key, not on the rope.
