Live from Port Charles, it’s General Hospital!
It looks like General Hospital’s 52nd anniversary celebration will last longer than this past week’s big flashback to 1963. GH will broadcast two live episodes this May, PEOPLE reports. The telecast will broadcast live from the ABC soap’s Prospect Studios in Los Angeles on Friday, May 15 and Monday, May 18 and the cast and crew will be performing two live shows each day — for the 2 p.m. ET and 1 p.m. PT broadcasts (the 2 p.m. performance will air in markets where the show has moved back to the 3 p.m. timeslot).
While live events have become common for anniversary broadcasts in the UK, where EastEnders aired live segments during it’s 30th anniversary week in March as well as an entirely-live anniversary episode, American soaps would air live each day from New York City. Soaps didn’t move to tape until producers in Los Angeles realized it was much cheaper to tape the episodes than have it performed live.
All American soaps were taped by 1975. Search for Tomorrow performed a live episode in August 1983 because the taped episode has reportedly been stolen. One Life to Live broadcast live for a complete week in May 2002 (the same week they won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Series).
No word yet which characters or storylines will be featured but one can assume it could be the fall out from this year’s edition of the Nurses Ball which should begin airing in early May.
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and City. Canadian fans can catch up with the series on the City TV app and at Citytv.com.
