The highly anticipated drama series So Long, Marianne is set to premiere this Friday, September 27 on Crave in Canada.
The eight-part series explores the legendary love story between Canadian poet Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. A Quiet Place: Day One and Hereditary’s Alex Wolff stars as Leonard while The Last Kingdom’s Thea Sofie Loch Næss stars as Marianne.
The miniseries first premiered earlier this year at the French festival Series Mania this past March and is a co-production between Montreal’s C3Media (Cineflix) for Crave and Norway’s public broadcast NRK.
Set in the picturesque Greek Island of Hydra, where the pair lived during the 1960s, So Long, Marianne will depict how two lonely souls fell in love during a period in their life where they are trying to figure out who they are, and their place in the world, while one of them is becoming one of the most famous singers of all time.
On Hydra, Leonard and Marianne will be joined by Australian novelists Charmian Cliftand her husband George Johnston – the matriarch and patriarch of a bohemian group of writers, artists, poets, and outcasts who were exploring a new world of free love, drugs, and artistic freedom, as well as the rivalries and jealousy that accompanied their intense, interwoven lives.
In addition to being set in Greece, the series will also feature scenes in New York, Montreal, and Oslo.
Charmian and George are played by Anna Torv (The Last of Us) and Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones). Peter Stormare (Fargo) will appear as Cohen’s mentor and fellow Canadian poet Irving Layton. Jonas Strand Gravli (Ragnarok) also stars as Marianne’s husband, Alex Jensen as does Ben Lloyd-Hughes (The Crown) as Alan Ginsberg.
Rounding out the cast are Canadian actors Macha Grenon, as Leonard’s mother Masha, Éric Bruneau as Robert Hershorn, Kim Lévesque Lizotte, and Robin L’Houmeau.
Montreal musician Patrick Watson will be contributing music to the series. The team behind So Long, Marianne include co-creators Tony Wood (Irvine Welsh’s Crime) and Østein Karlsen (Lilyhammer), director Bronwen Hughes (Breaking Bad), Ingeborg Klyve(Exit), and Québecois cinematographer Ronald Plante (Sharp Objects).
New episodes of So Long, Marianne will stream in English and French each Friday on Crave beginning Friday, September 27.
