Movies hitting theatres this week include two comic book sequels (Joker: Follie à Deux and Venom: The Last Dance), not one but two Sebastian Stan flicks (A Different Man and The Apprentice), and some TIFF favourites – including Saturday Night, Conclave, and We Live in Time.

October 4:

Joker: Folie à Deux

In the sequel to 2019’s Joker, Arthur Fleck is institutionalized at Arkham, awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love but also finds the music that’s always been inside him. Todd PhillipsJoker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 4.

A Different Man

Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost. A Different Man stars Sebastian Stan and hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 4.

White Bird

Struggling to fit in at his new school after being expelled for his treatment of Auggie Pullman, Julian is visited by his grandmother and is transformed by the story of her attempts to escape Nazi-occupied France during World War II. White Bird stars Helen Mirren, Gillian Anderson, and Orlando Schwerdt. The film is based on R.J. Palacio’s (Wonder) book and hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 4.

The Outrun

Rona, fresh out of rehab, returns to the wild Orkney Islands after more than a decade away. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her childhood merge with the more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery. The Outrun stars Saoirse Ronan, Saskia Reeves, and Stephen Dillane. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 4.

The Forest Hills

Shelley Duvall’s final film, The Forest Hills, tells the story of Rico who descends into madness in the Catskills Mountains after being haunted by nightmares. The film also stars Chiko Mendez, Dee Wallace, and Edward Furlong. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 4.

October 11:

Saturday Night

At 11:30 p.m. on October 11th, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night premiered at TIFF last month and stars Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, and Cory Michael Smith. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 11.

The Apprentice

The story of how a young Donald Trump started his real-estate business in 1970s and ’80s New York with the helping hand of infamous lawyer Roy Cohn. The Apprentice stars Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, and Maria Bakalova. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 11.

Woman of the Hour

Cheryl Bradshaw, a single woman looking for a suitor on a hit 1970s TV show, chooses charming bachelor Rodney Alcala, unaware that, behind the man’s gentle facade, he hides a deadly secret. Woman of the Hour was directed by and stars Anna Kendrick. The film hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 11, before streaming on Netflix on Friday, Oct. 18.

Piece by Piece

A vibrant journey through the life of cultural icon Pharrell Williams, told through the lens of LEGO animation. Piece by Piece, which premiered at TIFF last month, will also feature Gwen Stefani and Kendrick Lamar. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 11.

October 18:

Rumours

The leaders of seven wealthy democracies get lost in the woods while drafting a statement on a global crisis, facing danger as they attempt to find their way out. Rumours stars Cate Blanchett, Rolando Ravello, and Charles Dance. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 18.

We Live in Time

An up-and-coming chef and a recent divorcée find their lives forever changed when a chance encounter brings them together, in a decade-spanning, deeply moving romance. John Crowley’s We Live in Time premiered at TIFF last month and stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 18.

Smile 2

About to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her past. Smile 2 stars Kyle Gallner, Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage and Drew Barrymore.

October 25:

Venom: The Last Dance

Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down. Venom: The Last Dance stars Tom Hardy, Juno Temple, and Alanna Ubach. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 25.

Conclave

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of The Church. Conclave premiered last month at TIFF and stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 25.

Your Monster

After her life falls apart, soft-spoken actress Laura Franco finds her voice again when she meets a terrifying yet weirdly charming Monster living in her closet. Your Monster stars Meghann Fahy, Melissa Barrera, and Tommy Dewey. Hits theatres on Friday, Oct. 25.
