The TV Watercooler had the chance to speak with Canadian rising star Humberly González at The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada event on May 29 at the Ritz-Carlton in Toronto.
Gonzalez, who was named as one of ‘The Most Powerful Women in Canadian Entertainment,’ talks about gracing the iconic ‘Star Trek stage’ right here in Toronto, and previews her upcoming Netflix series, The Waterfront.
We discussed her “full circle” moment working on Star Trek: Section 31 alongside the legendary Michelle Yeoh and other incredible talents. She also shared exciting details about her highly anticipated new project from Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream), The Waterfront, describing it as a “juicy Netflix soap opera” brimming with “cliffhangers, drama, and romance,” promising viewers a “wild ride.”
You recently starred in Star Trek: 31, which filmed right here in Toronto.
That was incredible! I mean, I think any actor that lives in Toronto always knows about Pinewood Studios. We know that there’s a staged called the Star Trek stage, and the fact that it’s such a full circle movie [for me] to get to do a move [there] where I’m not committing my whole life to a show but will do a movie. It was really iconic.
And getting to play ball as Melle was such a move. I mean…
You got to work with Michelle Yeoh.
I mean, hello! Michelle Yeoh (as Philippa Georgie)! Yes, so many amazing people. There were so many talented humans in this movie like Rob Kazinsky (as Zeph), Sam Richardson (as Quasi), and Omari Hardwick (as Alok Sahar).
We had a lot of fun shooting it!
You’ve got a big project coming up. The Waterfront will be released on Netflix on June 19. It’s from Kevin Williamson. Did you grow up watching Dawson’s Creek?
I’ve seen a lot of it! I love Joshua Jackson! I saw him on Fridge [as well] and have followed his career. I actually worked with Joshua Jackson on an Audible series called Oracle 2 and that was really cool. So, I felt like this was a full circle moment for me too!
What can you tell us about The Waterfront?
Well, I’ll tell you this – it’s juicy like a Netflix soap opera. You’re going to eat it up! There’s cliffhangers, drama, and romance. It’s very steamy, fast paced, and also has a lot of dark humour which I didn’t expect.
Netflix gave us access to the first three episodes and I couldn’t put it down, even though I was in it. I just wanted to keep watching and see what happens, you know? I think people are in for a wild ride.
