The TV Watercooler caught up with actress Michelle Randolph on the red carpet at the Paramount+ and Pluto TV Holiday Event in Toronto this past week, where she opened up about the breakout success of the streamer’s drama Landman, her co-star relationships, and her role in the highly anticipated Scream 7.
Randolph, who plays Ainsley, the headstrong daughter of Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy and Ali Larter’s Angela, shared that the magnetic mother-daughter dynamic viewers see on screen was a case of life imitating art, and that she’s glad she can show her character’s heart in scenes with Thornton.
Instant Chemistry on Set
When asked about the effortless chemistry she shares with Larter, Randolph revealed that the bond was immediate.
“Crazily enough, we met, and we just clicked! As our relationship developed, she became one of my greatest friends, and that kind of shows [on screen]. So, it’s cool that our lives are kind of emulating Ainsley’s and Angela’s.
The actress also touched on the challenges posed by the recent Hollywood strikes, which caused a year-long delay between her casting and the start of filming. While the wait was difficult for everyone in the industry, she found a silver lining.
“I’m so happy that we shot it [when we did] because it gave me time to kind of sit with the character.”
Balancing Comedy and Emotion
Randolph’s character, Ainsley, also shares compelling screen time with Thornton’s Tommy. When comparing the comedic scenes (with Larter’s Angela) to the more emotional ones, Randolph confessed both offer unique challenges.
“Honestly, they’re both challenging. Comedy can almost be more challenging in a way. It just depends on the scene.”
However, she emphasized her affection for the tender moments she shares with her on-screen father, such as the recent episode that centred around the funeral of her character’s grandmother.
“I just love having those scenes between Ainsley and Tommy, when they get to have those moments together… Yes, it’s just nice to see her heart sometimes.”
As for Ainsley’s romantic future this season, Randolph gave a clear, and very Ainsley, response: “She has her pom-pom’s! She doesn’t need a man!”
Stepping into the Horror Hall of Fame
Keeping the excitement within the Paramount family, Randolph confirmed her involvement in the upcoming Screen 7. She was ecstatic about the opportunity to work with legendary screenwriter and director Kevin Williamson, who is returning to the franchise.
“It was so cool! I have much to say about it – but I have to hold it in, so I don’t give anything away. Working with Kevin Williamson and seeing all the movies before… People will not be disappointed!”
Ainsley’s Christmas List
Finally, we asked what gifts Ainsley would give her family members for Christmas this year, which revealed her character’s true feelings for them:
Angela (Ali Larter): Diamonds!
Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton): A new cowboy hat!
Cooper (Jacob Lofland): Coal!
