Canadian Soap Ratings: Who’s watching what?

Soap fans have played close attention to the American ratings race. Each week fans of the genre gather to see how their shows are faring in the Neilsen ratings. In Canada, Neilsen is partnered with Numeris (formerly BBM Canada), the Canadian audience measurement organization, which measures markets in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Montreal.

Programs broadcast in Canada (on Canadian networks) are ranked based on their AMA — average number of viewers watching the program during any given minute — in thousands. The following data is based on the overnight audience (does not count 7-day playback or online viewing). Data does not count the online viewings (all soaps are available on their network’s website) or on demand viewing (GH is currently the only soap unavailable on demand).

This data should give soap fans a better understanding on how the shows are doing in Canada. Readers should also note that CTV Two and City are available in less markets than the CBC, CTV or Global. Also of note is that Days of our Lives (Global/NBC), General Hospital (Citytv/ABC) and The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV Two/CBS) are all simulcast during the day while Global airs The Young and the Restless in pre-release before the news hour. These figures will also including CBC’s primetime airing of Coronation Street (excluding late night and Sunday morning repeats).
