A National Celebration: Jeffrey Latimer on Bringing Canada’s Walk of Fame to Canada Day (Exclusive)

jeffrey latimer canada's walk of fame 2025 interview

This Canada Day, Canada’s Walk of Fame 2025 gets a primetime spot on CBC, a powerful statement for our nation. I had the chance to sit down with Canada’s Walk of Fame CEO Jeffrey Latimer to talk about this incredible honour, especially at a time when Canadian sovereignty is top of mind. We also delved into the meticulous selection process for inductees, the “white whales” they’re thrilled to finally recognize, and what we, as Canadians, can do to celebrate our successes with more pride.

CBC will be airing this year’s Canada’s Walk of Fame Induction Gala on Canada Day, which is think is a great honour. Especially the year our sovereignty is called into question. How does that feel?

Amazing. Things happen for a reason, I really believe [that]. In our world and in our time, there are these moments when you look at things go the way they go, and the way the world is working right now, and the way people feel about Canada and what’s happened over the last number of years, and certainly how things have been going on. It’s amazing that CBC was able to say for the first time in 26 years, “Let’s do this on Canada Day!”

When I pitched the idea of [this year’s] show, it was CBC that came back with “Canada Day seems right.” We weren’t about to do it [together] over the years, and I now I don’t know why we would do it any other day. It’s the most patriotic day, and on our national network. So, I’m excited to tell these stories on Canada Day.

How does the selection process work?

People send in letters about who they believe. Some are absolutely worthy, while some others are not ready yet. Then there’s a committee, a jury, and our board members, and we look at who else is worthy and we try to figure out if it’s the right year for them or is it two years from now, so that maybe there’s another person that would fit with [another] inductee.

Is there a particular inductee this year that made you feel like you had been chasing this white whale for a long time and are glad it’s happening?

[Smiles] I think there are probably a few, but they don’t tell us that!

I think that it’s amazing that we are finally inducting Isadore Sharp at 93 years old! We’re also finally inducting Liona Boyd, after 50 years of her being in the business. Those are two that really strike me as “it’s about!” And we have that often… TIFF is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so it’s a perfect time to induct TIFF. Something just feels right. It’s the right year to do this.

Liona Boyd has said that as Canadians, we don’t often celebrate ourselves much. What can we do to change that?

By just literally finding a way to be more proud. Gordon Pinsent said once when he was getting a lifetime achievement award, and was up on the carpet and said, “I should feel proud of this award, but as a Canadian, I am only allowed to be pleased.”

It’s just so funny. That’s so Canadian, you know? Let’s be more proud. It’s good for us!

Canada’s Walk of Fame 2025 will air Tuesday, July 1 at 7 p.m. (7:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.
