mike weir canada's walk of fame 2025 interview

This past weekend was a special one for Canadian golf icon Mike Weir, who received his star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. Adding to the significance of the evening was the fact that his induction was presented by none other than his long-time friend, rock legend Tom Cochrane. I spoke with Mike on the red carpet about their unique bond, from ski trips to casual performances, and the personal meaning behind Cochrane’s anthem “Big League.”

What does it feel like being inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame by Tom Cochrane?

Well, Tom has been a good friend for a long time! Yeah, I couldn’t think of a better person to be here to introduce me.

Tom’s a good golfer himself, so you know, we’ve got a lot in common! We’re good buddies.

Have you guys played golf together?

We haven’t played yet! Our summer schedules haven’t meshed. We skied together this year. We did a ski trip, but we haven’t golfed yet!

Has he performed for you?

He came to the Masters a couple of years ago and performed for my family. Yeah, just in a casual setting. He’s an awesome person!

Favourite song?

Big League!

Canada’s Walk of Fame 2025 will air Tuesday, July 1 at 7 p.m. (7:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.
