Alt TV: Party Down

So this week’s best bet for some alternative TV is the new show Party Down. The show is created and produced by some amazing people which include Rob Thomas (from Veronica Mars) and Paul Rudd (who doesn’t really need an introduction). The first two episodes are directed by Fred Savage (yes, little Kevin Arnold from The Wonders Years but now he’s a big shot director…see It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

The show is about a Los Angeles catering team who are all trying to catch their big Hollywood breaks and stars stars Ken Marino (Vinnie Van Lowe from Veronica Mars, Joey’s prof on Dawson’s Creek‘s college years), Adam Scott (Palek on Tell Me You Love Me, Josh on Party of Five, Knocked Up, Step Brothers), Martin Starr (Bill from Freaks and Geeks), Jane Lynch (Role Models, Best in Show), Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas from Veronica Mars) and Lizzy Caplan (Amy from True Blood and was also in The Class and Mean Girls). Every week, the crew deal with a new event which leads to many great guest stars. The first two episodes were very Veronica Mars heavy as Poppa Mars (Enrico Colantoni) guest stars on the first while Jason Dohring (Logan) and Alona Tal (Meg) guest star as young Republicans in the second episode. And the best news…Kristen Bell will also make an appearance towards the end of the season.

So the downside is that it is not airing on any of the regular channels in Canada or even State-side…U.S. cable network Starz airs it Fridays at 10:30pm. In Canada, TMN-wannabe the Super Channel airs it during the same time. The best bet would probably be to use some of those “alternative” methods.
