— Another World star Charles Keating passed away on Friday after a three-year battle with lung cancer, at age 72.
The London-born actor was best known to daytime audiences for his role as Another World’s villainous Carl Hutchins from 1983-1985 and then 1991-1999. Although Carl started out was a villain, fans grew to love him just as Rachel (Victoria Wyndham) did.
The Shakespearean actor appeared on a number of Broadway plays, including “Loot,” “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui,” and “The House of Astreus.”
In addition to Another World, Keating is also remembered for his other soap roles: All My Children’s Damon Lazarre (1987-1988), As the World Turns’ Niles Mason (1989-1991) and Port Charles’ James Ritchfield (2001-2003).
Keating was awarded with the Outstanding Lead Actor trophy at the 1996 Daytime Emmy Awards:
In primetime, Keating has appeared on Sex and the City, Alias, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess as well as the British mini-series Brideshead Revisited.
Keating’s film credits include The Bodyguard, The Thomas Crown Affair and Duece Bigalow: European Gigolo.
In 2010, Keating came in at #10 on We Love Soaps’ 50 Greatest Soap Actors list. Click here to check out his awards and accolades. We Love Soaps has also done a roundup of some of Keating’s classic AW scenes, here.
Keating is survived by Mary, his wife of 50 years, his two sons, James and Sean, as well as six grandchildren. For an interview with Keating’s son, Sean, click here.
Tributes for the actor from his former co-stars began appearing as the news of the actor’s passing was first made public by his former co-star Mark Printer (ex-Grant Harrison, Another World) on Facebook, wrote the following Shakespeare quote: “He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.”
Alicia Coppola, who played Lorna Devon from 1991 to 1994, tweeted the following:
Charles Keating has passed. I am so very sad. Along w/ @LindaDano he was my very first acting teacher. The actress I am is because of them.

“The roar of Charles has been stilled. I can’t imagine a world without him,” said Anna Stuart (ex-Donna) in a statement to Soap Opera Digest.
Also reaching out the magazine was Keating’s former on-screen love, Victoria Wyndham (ex-Rachel), who wrote, “Charles Keating was an inspired teacher, diligent partner, a generous friend – he was wily, mischievous and volatile. I miss him greatly. Our revels now are ended.”
The soap mag is promising a full tribute to the beloved soap icon in its next issue, hitting newsstands on August 25th.
Charles Keating shared Another World’s finale scene with Victoria Wyndham – check out the clip as Rachel and Carl closed out what many consider to be the best soap opera of all time.
