The anticipated drama Queen Sugar will make its Canadian debut on Wednesday, September 28 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo in Canada. The series, which is executive produced by Ava DuVernay, has it’s American premiere today (September 6) on OWN.

Queen Sugar chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana. The siblings are Nova (True Blood’s Rutina Wesley), a world-wise journalist and activist, Charley (Star Wars: The Clone WarsDawn-Lyen Gardner), the savvy wife and manager of an NBA star and Ralph Angel (Awkward’s Kofi Siriboe), a formerly incarcerated young father in search of redemption. Following a family tragedy, the Bordelons must navigate the triumphs and struggles of their complicated lives in order to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.

The series also stars Greg Vaughan (Days of our Lives, The Young and the Restless) as Calvin, a cop and longtime lover of Nova (Wesley). Pretty Little Liars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Bianca Lawson will also appear as Darla, Ralph Angel’s (Siriboe) ex-girlfriend and mother of their 6-year-old son Blue.

Queen Sugar is based on the novel by the same name by Natalie Baszile. Oprah Winfrey and Melissa Carter also serve as executive producers along with DuVernay — who also wrote the pilot and developed the series for television. All 13 episodes of its first season will be directed by women. Queen Sugar has already been renewed for a second season.

Look for Suits, which currently occupies Wednesday 9pm slot wrap up the first half of its sixth season later this month. Bravo is proving to have a busy slate following Bell Media’s decision to quietly close out M3 (previously MuchMoreMusic) and transition series such as Pretty Little Liars and Younger to this network. Joining Queen Sugar on Wednesday in mid-October is supernatural drama Falling Water (from USA Network).

I subscribe to OWN through my cable provider. In anticipation of watching this show, I began reading up on it to hype myself for the premier. Only to find out that night as I was scrolling through my guide that it isn’t even listed! So, I thought there was an error on the guide. And as I was watching, the ads said it was premiering at 9! I watch, and of course, the guide was correct, and I’m stuck watching Toddlers & Tiaras! Being a subscriber to OWN, you would think I would get this content. But, a quick google search tells me that the show doesn’t premier in Canada until the 28th… And that it won’t even be broadcast on the OWN? Instead, it will be Broadcast on Bravo? What’s the deal with that? One up for downloading shows I want to watch, several down for the Cable companies dictatorship on what we can and cannot watch…
