Rose McGowan, the beloved Charmed star, brought magic to Fan Expo Canada with a touching tribute to her friend Shannen Doherty and looked back at her most memorable roles, including Scream and Jawbreaker.
McGowan remembered her dear friend Shannen Doherty, who passed away from cancer earlier this summer, as ‘brave and badass,’ just like her Charmed character, Prue. She shared that Shannen’s desire to connect with other cancer patients was rooted in her own experience growing up in an industry obsessed with appearances. ‘She tried to shed all of that and say, “I know you’re suffering, and you might feel alone, but you’re not. We are united,”‘ McGowan recalled.
Doherty was originally scheduled to be part of the Charmed reunion panel alongside McGowan in Toronto on August 23. “She loved coming to these fan conventions and meeting all of you,” McGowan beamed. “She is here with us, and I think we can all feel her presence.”
Although the pair didn’t share the screen on Charmed, they did appear together in the 1997 film Nowhere. McGowan recalled, “I was asked about her for years. We were pitted against each other, but we never rose to the bait. And to me, that’s sisterhood.”
McGowan recalled some of the most magical moments in her career. “Just that first moment being on Charmed and putting my hand out and having the candle appear. That’s the light that started it!” she exclaimed.
The actress also had fond memories of working on the first Scream film. “I thought all sets would be like that one! Wes Craven was such a wizard and an amazing human being. We’re all still here talking about his work.”
She gushed about Jawbreaker as well. “Darren Stein made a hell of a script!’ Adding that an executive tried to talk her out of working with an openly gay director, McGowan said, ‘Learn it, live it, love it, bitch! He’s a director with an amazing vision, who obviously has a unique experience and is making this unique movie. Let’s do this!’
