Daytime Confidential confirmed the rumour that Sarah Brown and Tamara Braun will make cameo appearances on General Hospital! The former Carlys will join current (and the longest running) Carly, Laura Wright on the soap’s 51st anniversary episode airing Tuesday, April 1.
Sarah Brown originated the role of Caroline Leigh “Carly” Benson Quartermaine Corinthos Corinthos Alcazar Corinthos Jacks on April 8. Brown’s tenure saw Carly’s affair with her biological mother Bobbie Spencer’s (Jackie Zeman) husband, Dr. Tony Jones (Brad Maul) and subsequent on night stands with A.J. Quartermaine (Sean Kanan) and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton).
Brown decided to leave the soap when her contract expired in early 2001, announcing on her website: “I am not leaving because of money issues or contract issues. I am leaving because my heart is telling me I’m done.” She would last air on April 23, 2001 while newcomer Tamara Braun took over on May 2, 2001. During Braun’s tenure, Carly’s love affair with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) cemented Carly’s place on the front burner, completing then-head writer Bob Guza’s mob triad focused (Jason/Carly/Sonny) take on the long-running ABC soap.
Braun decided to exit the soap when her contract was up in 2005 and last aired in the role on April 15, 2005. Jennifer Bransford (ex-Georgie Phillips, One Life to Live) was hired as the third actress to portray Carly but only lasted for a few months as ABC realized the casting did not work out. Guiding Light star Laura Wright was then brought on and made her debut in the fall of 2005. Carly would then fall for Sonny’s rival (in all things Brenda), corporate raider Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher).
Since leaving the role of Carly in 2001, Sarah Brown has enjoyed a steady career in daytime, having played the role of Julia Larrabee on As the World Turns from 2004-2005. Brown returned to General Hospital in January 2008, but as a new character named Claudia Zacchara and stayed with the series until November 2009. Brown would then appear on The Bold and the Beautiful as Aggie Jones from November 2009 until February 2011 before heading to Days of our Lives as Madison James from October 2011 until August 2015.
Tamara Braun would also head to Days of our Lives, playing two roles: Ava Vitali (in 2008) and then as a Taylor Walker recast (in 2011). Braun also appeared on All My Children as Resse Williams from October 2008 until April 2009.
Laura Wright began her daytime soap career playing Ally Rescott Bowman on Loving and The City from 1991 until 1997. From 1997 until joining GH in 2005, Wright was best known for playing Cassie Layne on Guiding Light.
So who will Brown and Braun portray on the 51st anniversary episode? My bet is on Carly as the episode finds Sonny and Carly going over their history with each other. It would make sense of each incarnation of Carly flashed back with Benard’s Sonny.

The April 1st episode also finds Monica being visited by past loved ones (rumoured to be Stuart Damon’s Alan and Natalia Livingston’s Emily), while Bobbie reconnects with Scotty (Kin Shriner). Meanwhile, Kevin (Jon Lindstrom), Lucy (Lynn Herring), Mac (John J. York) and Felicia (Kristina Wagner) look back at their long-running friendships.
What’s your take on the return former Carlys? Feel bad that Bransford was left out? Let me know in the comments. Personally, I think it’s fun and neat way to celebrate the soap’s 51st anniversary. Despite the overexposure of Sonny and Carly during Guza’s reign, CarSon do represent a big part of GH’s history and I did feel that Brown and Braun missed out on celebrating the soap’s big 50th anniversary last year.
