New This Weekend: Vigil, Killers of the Flower Moon, Criminal Record and True Detective

New shows either premiering or available to stream this weekend include Wild Cards, One More Time, Criminal Record, Unwanted, Vigil, and True Detective: Night Country. New movies to check out at home include Role Play, Dumb Money, and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Some other premieres from this week, previously blogged about, include the second season premiere of The Traitors US, the first part of the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City season four reunion, the first episode of Ted, and the Jake Johnson and Lonely Island comedy Self Reliance.

Soap fans can also stream the tribute episodes to the late Jackie Zeman and her General Hospital character Bobbie Spencer. The Wednesday, Jan. 10 and Thursday, Jan. 11 episodes of GH are now streaming on Citytv on demand, citytv.com and the Citytv+ streaming service.

Role Play

Emma (Kaley Cuoco) has a wonderful husband and two kids in the suburbs of New Jersey. She also has a secret life as an assassin for hire, a secret that her husband Dave (David Oyelowo) discovers when the couple decides to spice up their marriage with a little role play. Bill Nighy also stars. The film is now streaming on Prime Video.

Wild Cards

A new Canadian comedy procedural about a demoted detective, Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti), and con-woman, Max (Vanessa Morgan), who are forced to team up to solve crimes so that Ellis can get back to his detective post and for Max to stay out of jail. Jason Priestley also stars. The first episode premiered on Jan. 10 on CBC and CBC Gem. New episodes will air and stream Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

One More Time

Another new Canadian series that premiered this week on CBC and CBC Gem, One More Time is a workplace comedy about D.J. (D.J. Demers), a heard of hearing manager at a second-hand sporting goods store, and his team of “hard-working” employees. Look for new episodes to air and stream on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.

Dumb Money

The “David vs. Goliath” story about everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop into the world’s hottest company. The film stars Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Myha’la, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Ramos, and Shailene Woodley. Dumb Money, which premiered at TIFF in September, is now streaming on Prime Video.

Killers of the Flower Moon

At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. The film stars Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is now streaming on Apple TV+ and is based on David Grann’s bestselling book.

Criminal Record

Starring Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, Criminal Record is a new thriller series where an anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives into a confrontation over an old murder case. One of the detectives is a young woman in the early stages of her career, while the other is a well-connected man who is determined to protect his legacy. The series comes from Paul Rutman (Vera and Indian Summers) and touches on the issues of race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarized Britain. The first two episodes of Criminal Record are now streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes dropping on Wednesdays.

Unwanted

One of the world’s largest cruise ships, which after taking on board 28 shipwrecked refugees, is taken hostage by the desperate asylum seekers when they learn that the captain has been ordered to take them back to Libya. The series first premiered in Sky last fall and will premiere on Showcase in Canada at 9 p.m. with 2 episodes. New episodes will air Fridays at 9 p.m. and stream on STACKTV and the Global TV app (with a cable subscription).

Vigil (Season 2)

The premiere of the nail-biting police thriller is now on Crave! The officers are delving into the highly secretive world of arms dealing, and weapons development. The mystery moves from the sea to the sky as Silva (Suranne Jones) and Longacre (Rose Leslie) investigate a dark conspiracy in the world of the British Air Force. New episodes stream Fridays on Crave (with STARZ).

True Detective: Night Country

The fourth season of True Detective stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, who will have to confront the darkness they carry themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice. The premiere airs and streams on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. ET, with new episodes premiering Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
