Big Brother Canada returns for its 12th season on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Global and STACKTV. The TV Watercooler had the opportunity to speak with contestant Matthew Wong before entering the house. Check out what Matthew had to say below!

What’s your name, how old are you, where are you from and what is your occupation?

I’m Matthew. I’m 27 years old and I’m from Surrey, B.C. I’m a kinesiologist and personal trainer.

How familiar are you with Big Brother? When did you start watching?

To be honest, I’m not too familiar with Big Brother Canada. I had watched an American season beforehand and then when I went through the process of being a finalist, I started watching [the Canadian version].

I’ve seen one full season and then I’m halfway through another season right now, so I am coming in with a little bit of experience.

What made you want to try out for BBCAN?

I just think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It kind of came knocking at my door and I thought it’d be a good time to answer! After COVID and everything, I hadn’t really travelled much and had been focused on my business and just the grind… So, I’ve really been locked into that. I thought, you only live once!

I’m not a very spontaneous person, but this was just a really good opportunity to just get out there and live a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and experience.

What life experiences do you think will benefit you in the BBCAN house?

Just from growing up in Surrey, I feel like I’ve lived in a very diverse community. I played a lot of sports – both individual and team sports – so, I’ve just had the opportunity to work with a lot of different types of people.

I’ve been the star player, I’ve been the “role” player, so I’ve got the tools and the characteristics to really help myself thrive in the game.

I feel like I have a good skill set to kind of utilize throughout the game. I’ve been an athlete and I’ve done really well in school. It just comes naturally to me. So, I feel like I’ll have a lot of tools that will help me to thrive in the game.

Would you be open for a showmance?

I’m single, so it was a possibility at the beginning. However, after watching season nine of Big Brother Canada and kind of seeing what happened to Jed, I think that opportunity kind of dwindled a little bit, to be honest!

I’m a gamer, so I’m here to win and I would like to stay locked in and focus! I’m trying to keep my eyes on the prize.

What types of fellow houseguests would you see yourself aligning with?

I feel like I want to align myself with people who ticked all the boxes to be strong and successful in the game. So, as someone who’ll be good at physical challenges, I want to make sure I can also tick all the boxes with intellectual people. People who have a strong social game as well as people who have a really good memory, because I know that in the later stages of the game, that’s going to really be important.

I feel like I’m very well-rounded and I can kind of do a little bit of everything, so I can kind of be that chameleon and play the role that I need to with my alliance. I do definitely want to make sure that we are a diverse alliance.

What type of people do you have trouble getting along with?

I’m a lover. I love to be around people who are really positive. I’m energetic. If I had to choose one type of person that I don’t always get along with it would probably be someone who’s just a negative person… Someone is always kind of talking bad or putting out that bad energy. That’s kind of the opposite of me.

I’ll probably stay away from that as I would probably clash heads a little bit with someone who’s more negative.

From what you did see of Big Brother and Big Brother Canada, do you have a favourite player?

I like Kiefer from season nine [of Big Brother Canada]. I just thought he was true to himself. However, he did realize it was a game and he was willing to kind of go outside of his characteristics because I saw him as a really trustworthy and loyal guy. But, as he said throughout the game, “I’m here to play! I’m here to win,” and I see that with myself, too.

I’m a really humble and honest type of person, but I’m a gamer. And when we step into that house, or when you step onto the court or the field, things change a little bit. We’re not friends at this moment, but I’m sure I’ll create some great relationships that will be carried on after the game.

Big Brother Canada Season 12 premieres Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Global and STACKTV.
